2010 UFAs-Eastern Conference

Again, I'm going to focus on players from each Eastern Conference team that I believe will be leaving. Also, just like yesterday, the links will take you to a card of each player, or you can checkout my Sportsbuy.com store.

Atlanta-Colby Armstrong. Since they just picked up Dustin Byfuglien, the Thrashers no longer need Colby to fill the power forward role.

Boston-Johnny Boychuk. He was a good defensman for them, but Boston doesn't have the cap space to fit him in...yet, until they trade Tim Thomas.

Buffalo-Raffi Torres. Again, Raffi played well for Buffalo, but not worth keeping him.

Carolina-Brian Pothier. They should try and keep Brian, but it might be time for a change of scenery for him.

Florida-Mathieu Roy. Unfortunately, he doesn't fit Dale Tallon's mold.

Montreal-Glen Metropolit. Solid two-way player that will make an impact, defensively, where ever he goes.

New Jersey-Ilya Kovalchuk. Didn't really work out for Ilya in NJ. He'll more than likely chase The Cup with another team or go play in the KHL with Jagr.

New York Islanders-Martin Biron. DiPietro should be back for a full season and Marty won't want to sit on the bench as much as he will.

New York Rangers-Olli Jokinen. Another one of the deadline deals that didn't really work out. I can see Olli staying with the Rangers, but I think he would benefit from playing somewhere with less of a profile.

Ottawa-Anton Volchenkov. I think he might be sick of the Spezza circus going on in Ottawa.

Philadelphia-Lukas Krajicek. Solid D-man in the playoffs, but there has to be a casualty while the Flyers chase a legitimate #1 goalie.

Pittsburgh-Sergei Gonchar. He's been in contract talks with the Pens, but they're having trouble agreeing to the terms. He'll get what he wants elsewhere.

Tampa Bay-Alex Tanguay. He works for the Lightning, but he is getting up there in years, while TBL is getting younger.

Toronto-Garnet Exelby. The Leafs have a solid defense, which he was a big part of.

Washington-Eric Belanger. He'd be stupid to leave, since he's had the best chance of winning The Cup with Washington during his career.

2010 UFAs-Western Conference

I'm going to pick out a player from each team that I think is not going to be around next year. As usual, the links will take you to a card of that player at my Sportsbuy.com store.

Anaheim-Saku Koivu. I think playing with his little brother Mikko is going to entice him away from the California sun.

Calgary-Chris Higgins. He has played in the media spotlight in Montreal...a little less media pressure would probably do him some good.

Chicago-John Madden. He always sparked the Hawks and had a good presence on young team. I'd expect him to go somewhere with lots of kids (NYI or Tampa?).

Colorado-Marek Svatos. The Avs are getting younger, while Svatos is not.

Columbus-Nathan Paetsch. Serviceable, but probably won't go until July 2nd or 3rd.

Dallas-Jere Lehtinen. I have no idea which direction the Stars are looking to go in, but with not signing Modano and Turco, it's obvious that they're looking to make some changes.

Detroit-Brett Lebda. Solid d-man that will be a solid addition to any teams blue line.

Edmonton-Fernando Pisani. Not usually healthy, unfortunately. Still has some offensive ability. Might be time for a change of scenery though.

Los Angeles-Alex Frolov. Disappointing season. LA either needs to resign and find a way to motivate him, or let him move on.

Minnesota-Derek Boogaard. Word is, Pavel Datsyuk is looking forward to playing with the Boggie Man.

Nashville-Dan Ellis. Rinne outplayed him...all year. He'll find a good home eventually though.

Phoenix-Lee Stempniak. Played solid for the Yotes after being traded from Toronto. He played well after leaving that circus, but the off-season circus in Phoenix will sour him again. He walks.

San Jose-Manny Malhotra. Too bad for the Sharks. They need to retool, and I don't believe that Manny wants to be part of it. You know, go to a team that isn't cursed.

St. Louis-Paul Kariya. Reunion tour with Selanne out in Anaheim, then time to retire.

Vancouver-Kyle Wellwood. He's done well for the Canucks while there. I actually think that he will stay to play with Henrik and Daniel.

Stanley Cup Finals Preview

Are the Flyers the "Cinderella" team of the NHL this year? No. That was Montreal. Philly is a well balanced team, much like the Hawks, in a relatively unbalanced Eastern Conference. I'm going to take a look at some of the players from each team and who the wins the match up for each team. Also, remember, that the links will take you to cards of each player that are for sale through Sportsbuy.com, and that I am offering free shipping on all orders of $5.00, or more, until the end of May.

Captains: Toews v. Richards. Both players are leaders and have won at each level they've played at. They're both willing to do whatever it takes to win games. Both have level heads and know what to do, how to do it, and where to do it, to get the job done. Toews is without a doubt the heart of the Hawks. The Flyers did well when Richards was out earlier this year. Edge: Draw.

Snippers: Kane v. Gagne. Kaner, as he is called by teammates, can place pucks into small areas of nets and thread needles in the passing lanes. Gagne is adept at doing the same, but not as well as Kane. Gagne has also had injury problems in the past...including this season. Both players are playing at the tops of their games right now. Edge: Kane.

Secondary Scoring: Bolland v. Giroux. Bolland has done a good job of shutting down the top players on other teams by being a pest, and has the skill set to score a few goals. Giroux also has the hands to score a couple (as he showed in Game 7 against Montreal-Suh-weet goal). Giroux is also good at shutting down opponents, but may not nag the other teams top forwards as well as Bolland does. Edge: Bolland.

Fourth Liners: Eager v. Lapierriere. Eager is a pain in the but. He hits everything that moves and doesn't take any poop from anybody that can also score if given the chance. Lapierriere never stops running his mouth, but can anyone really understand what he's saying on the ice with his accent and a mouth piece? Does it matter? No. He is willing to do what it takes to win, whether that's blocking shots with his face, if need be (won't hurt as much now with that cage). He is effective as being a shut down type player and can net a few. He may be looking at his last chance to win a Cup since he is getting up there in years, and will play with abandonment. Edge: Lapierriere.

Norris Trophy D-men: Keith v. Pronger. Both players have very active sticks and are very good at getting those sticks in passing lanes. Keith has more speed, but Pronger plays with more of an edge. Both jump into the play and can pot a few if the opportunity presents itself. Edge: Keith.

Shot Blocking Defenseman: Sopel v. ???. I haven't watch the Flyers closely enough to see which d-man on their team blocks a lot of shots. I have seen Sopel blocking a lot of shots though. It shows since he looks like he fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. Edge: ???-we will find out.

Shut Down Defenseman: Hjalmerson v. Coburn. Both of these guys can make a great first pass out of the zone, which is necessary to form a breakout and start the transition to offense. Both players are more than willing to lay a big hit. Hjalmerson is more than willing to block shots and can be paired with just about any d-man in the Hawks lineup. Coburn has come a long way in his development. He keeps players to the outside. Edge: Hjalmerson.

Goal: Niemi v. Leighton. Both of these guys have stood on their heads during the post season. Niemi has been dominate and has stolen his fair share of games this post season. Leighton, who has also been dominate, is finally coming into his own. Edge: Niemi.

Back Up Goalies: Huet v. Boucher. Edge: Draw. Doesn't matter since neither of these guys can stop a beach ball.

Side Notes:

Getting lost in the Hossa hype, is that this is also Leino's third straight time to the Finals (2 with Detroit and now with Philly).

Patrick Sharp and Ben Eager broke into the league with the Flyers, and Leighton and Boucher have both been Blackhawks.

Edge: Chicago. They have more depth, skill, and are an overall deeper team than the Flyers.

Eastern Conference Finals Preview

I never thought Washington and Pittsburgh would not be in the conference finals. I don't think anyone except the Montreal and Philadelphia fans thought their teams would be here either. Both teams that are still around have been playing some great hockey. Links will take you to cards that are for sale at Sportsbuy.com. Philly's unbelievable comeback against Boston and winning four straight games is remarkable. Danny Brier, Simon Gagne, Hartnell and Richards have been rolling. Chris Pronger has showed us why he's one of the NHL's leading defensemen. The revolving door in net hasn't slowed the Flyers down either. Leighton and Boucher have played awesome when called upon and have each stolen games for the Flyers.

Montreal has done the unbelievable by eliminating the best team in the NHL's regular season when they dispatched of Washington, and then dealt the death blow to the NHL's reigning Stanley Cup Champions in Pittsburgh. Inspired offense from Gionta, Gomez and Cammalleri have made that happen. Obvious solid and steady defense from Spacek and the huge Hal Gill. Halak is still on fire and skillfully playing above and beyond what a lot of people thought he could.

I will predict a winner for this series: Montreal. They have the fire power, grit, determination, and belief that they can win.

Western Conference Finals Preview

The two teams that were supposed to be here at the start of the playoffs are there. No one can say that San Jose and Chicago weren't the two best teams in the Western Conference leading into Day 1 of the playoffs. Both played great hockey throughout the regular season and have played strong games to get where they're at now. Here I'm going to break down the teams a little bit. Lines 1 and 2 for San Jose. The Thornton, Marleau, Heatley line got off to a slow start in Round 1. Colorado did a good job of shutting them down and holding the line to a handful of points. They were able to come alive against Detroit and make up for their lack of offense against Colorado. Pavelski, Setoguchi, and Clowe made up for the Big 3's lack of scoring in Round 1. They were also the icing on the cake that helped to bounce Detroit from contention. They'll need to keep that up if they want to move on.

Lines 1 and 2 for Chicago. Toews, Kane and whoever they put up on the other wing. Lets face it, whether it's Hossa, Brouwer, Sharp or Byfuglien, Toews and Kane make the other winger look good. They've both been effective in the first two rounds riding pretty impressive point streaks throughout the playoffs, which they need to keep up if the Hawks are going to have a chance to move on. Bolland, Ladd, and Versteeg will be playing against the Number 1 line for San Jose. Knowing that they'll be trying to shut down their line while controlling the puck in the other teams end and provide a little bit of nastiness while doing it...just like they did against Vancouver.

Defense for San Jose. Rob Blake has been playing some great hockey lately. Generally being a pain in the butt to play against and making some good plays. By far the leader on the back end for the Sharks. The Hawks will have to exploit his lack of mobility. Dan Boyle got over his gaffe in the 1st Round and has been a healthy contributor to the Sharks offense. He will make turnovers and they Hawks need to jump on those chances. Doug Murray is a big strong guy with some decent speed. The Hawks need to keep their heads up or Murray will remove it from their shoulders. Jason Demers is turning out to be a solid d-man for the Sharks. The Hawks will have to take advantage of his lack of experience and teach him a few things.

Defense for Chicago. Seabrook and Keith are the top pair; very solid and know where each other is at which helps them get out of trouble. They will be playing against the Thornton line. If the Sharks top line is going to succeed, they need to get set up in the offensive zone and try and draw these guys out of position. Brian Campbell is back. It was surprising how much of an impact he makes on the Hawks offense. He can be called the Hawks Achilles heel...shut him down and you shut down most of the offense. Brent Sopel has been old reliable, literally, for the Hawks. He takes a beating and keeps coming back for seconds, thirds, and fourths. A great shot blocker, but if the Sharks can fake a shot and make a pass around or over him, they'll get a scoring chance.

Goalies: Nabakov and Niemi are playing solid. They're both stealing games for their teams and keeping their teams on top when called upon. If the Sharks want to beat Niemi they need to make some passes across the crease to get him moving and not give him a chance to set to block the shot. If the Hawks want to beat Nabokov, they will need to get him one on one to beat him, or let some bombs go from the point and get some deflections.

I'm only going to make one prediction for this series: Great hockey will be played by both teams. This is going to be a great display of hockey by two of the NHL's greatest teams.

Round 2 Match Up-Montreal v. Pittsburgh

Please excuse me if something doesn't sound right. I'm only half way through my first cup of coffee this morning. Anyways, we stand on the morn of Round 2 starting for the reigning Cup champs and the team that pulled off the biggest upset of the 1st Round. Also, like always, the links will take you to a card of each player in my Sportsbuy.com store. If you don't see a card you like, feel free to check out the rest of my inventory.

This series is going to be all about skill and the other team shutting it down. I've heard rumblings of doubt about Montreal's ability to shut down the Pens. Let me just point out that they shut down Washington, which is without doubt, one of the NHL's most skilled teams.

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin or Tomas Plekanec or Mike Cammalleri, which forward pair would you rather have? Enough said. Despite each teams' leading scorers, like most playoff series, the goal scorers have to come from Lines 2 and 3. That will place the burden not only on the stars listed above but also on Kunitz, Staal, and Talbot for the Pens and Gionta, Gomez, and Pouliot for the Canadians.

On D for each team, they have a shut down d-man Hal Gill and Brooks Orpik; a puck moving defenseman in Gonchar and Markov; and a couple guys that do a good job of not sticking out too much like Hamrlik and McKee. If these guys can make a first good pass out of the zone and play well positionally, they'll limit the other team's scoring chances and create a few for their team.

Marc-Andre Fleury, like I said before, seems to be a little worn down. He will not face a ton of shots, but he has to steal a couple goals for the Pens every night. Jaroslav Halak has been on fire lately, not that I need to tell you that. Pittsburgh probably won't throw everything and the kitchen sink at him like Washington did, so he too will have to make some huge saves to keep his team in it.

When all is said and done, I like Pittsburgh better than the Habs. Pittsburgh in 6. I don't think Montreal will be able to shut down the Pens that play well together as a team.

Round 2-Sharks v. Red Wings

Since I'm not going to have time today to do a full run down of all the series, I'm at least going to get my predictions and thoughts in about the first game of Round 2.

This series is going a showcase of skills. Both teams are puck possession teams, so the stars on each team like Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Franzen on Detroit; and Thornton, Marleau and Heatley are going to have to bury their chances. Detroit has the depth and will get secondary scoring from players like Helm, Abdelkader, and Cleary. San Jose needs their "Gold Medal Line" of Thornton, Marleau and Heatley to get on a roll if they're going to have a chance. Likewise, Pavelski, Setoguchi and Clowe need to keep on the same pace that they were on in Round 1.

Both teams have solid defensemen. Lidstrom and Rob Blake are the anchors on Detroit and San Jose's blue lines. Rafalski keeps the Wing's power play ticking along and Dan Boyle is going to have to do the same for San Jose.

In net, Nabokov is going to have to steal the show. Detroit is going to be peppering him with shots and he will need to be on the top of his game. Howard, although relatively unproven so far, will be facing the biggest challenge of his career by facing the high powered San Jose offense-when it shows up.

All together, I think this series is going to go the distance. San Jose is fighting for their playoff lifes and Detroit is rolling along like they do every year. Still, I'm taking San Jose in 7.

Round 1 Wrap Up-Eastern Conference

Now that the Habs have upset the Caps in Game 7 last night, I can break down my predictions for Round 1 for the Eastern Conference. Also, I appoligize for not giving my Round 2 predictions yesterday. They will be in a seperate post, hopefully a little bit later today.

New Jersey v. Philadelphia. I said it would be Philly in 7, but it only took the Flyers 5 games to oust the Devils. After Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne went down I didn't give the flyers much of a chance, but Brian Boucher played well during this series, and Flyers rallied around each other and played a great team game. It didn't hurt that Brodeur was a little off his game during this series. Mike Richards did a good job as a set up man, getting a little over 1 assists per game, on average. Pronger did a good job of shutting down the Devils big guns, Parise and Elias. Kovalchuk was just about the only player on the Devils to notch a couple points consistently throughout the series.

Buffalo v. Boston. I said it would be Buffalo in 5, but it was actually Boston in 6. Tim Thomas couldn't get it done, and Tukka Rask came in and never looked back. He played well for Boston, but would he have done as well if Stafford and Vanek were available to the Sabres the whole series. Miroslav Satan did a good job leading the charge for the B's by netting 2 and assisting on 3 others while still leading the B's top scorers (with 5 points each, Recchi, Krejci, and Bergeron) in plus/minus. Ryan Miller played consistent with his great work during the regular season, but the Sabres lacked secondary scoring from guys like Gerbe, Grier, and Kaleta.

Pittsburgh v. Ottawa. I said it would be Pittsburgh in 5, but it actually took the Pens 6. So far the Pens look like the team that is peaking at the right time. Crosby and Malkin wiped the floor with the Sens. Marc-Andre Fleury played well, but wasn't up to par where he was last year (can't blame him since he won it all last year). It appears that Ottawa's glaring weakness is on the back end. Pascal Leclair and Brian Elliott let in 24 goals against in 6 games. That could be due to lack of good defensemen in front of them. Ottawa's saving grace was Daniel Alfredsson, who played outstanding no matter if the Sens were winning or losing, on the road or at home, during the 1st period or overtime. He was by far the Sens best forward.

Washington v. Montreal. I said Washington in 4, but boy was I wrong as Montreal won it in Game 7 last night. I think it's safe to say that we all expected Ovechkin, Backstrom and company to win after having a comanding 3-1 lead on the Habs. Varlamov did a good job in relief of Theodore, who looked horrible. Jaroslav Halak on the other hand turned himself into a brick wall, when he came in for relief of Carey Price. The shot totals that he faced seem more like totals from games that went into double or triple overtime, not 3 regulation periods. Once Montreal figured out how to defend themselves against Washington's attack, guys like Hal Gill and Roman Hamerlik were able shut down and clear the Caps out of Halak's crease. It didn't hurt that Cammalleri found his stride and Tomas Plekanec continued his production.

Western Conference Round 1 Wrap Up

Now that the Wings have defeated the Yotes in Game 7 last night, I can break down my predictions for Round 1 and give some predictions for Round 2 for the Western Conference.

Sharks v. Avs. I said San Jose in 5 games. It actually took them 6 games, but if Dan Boyle didn't score on his own goalie, Evgeni Nabokov in Game 3. Boyle easily could have been "the goat" for the Sharks. That goal put the Sharks down 2-1 in the series. Craig Anderson of Colorado was playing some pretty darn good goal for the Avs, and kept the Heatley, Thornton, Marleau trio to 1 goal and 9 assists. The Sharks also had some great production from their not-big-name players, Clowe, Pavelski and Setoguchi.

Yotes v. Wings. I said Detroit in 5 games, but it actually took all 7. Who thought the young Yotes would bring a healthy Detroit to 7 games? I sure didn't. Ilya Bryzgalov was fantastic. Phoenix did what they've done all season by just hanging around and making the other team pay. Unfortunately for them, Detroit is one of the best teams at making their opposition pay (See the power play goal by Lidstrom in Game 7 that had all 4 Phoenix penalty killers so dead that they pretty much just stood their and watched). The big guns are rolling for Detroit, but the Yotes really didn't have a mobile enough defense to stop Zetterberg, Datsyuk or Franzen. The Yotes really missed Shane Doan who was injured midway through the series.

Canucks v. Kings. I said it would be LA in 6, but was actually Vancouver in 6. I didn't get to watch much of this series, since the games were on too late for me. Vancouver is gong to surprise some people, myself included. They have a very balanced attack. Mikael Samuelsson had a GREAT series. The Nucks are getting some production from Ehrhoff, Salo. and the rest of their D-corps. Roberto didn't have a spectacular series, but was good enough to get it done against the younger,Jonathan Quick. This experience wasn't a waste for the Kings, since Doughty, Kopitar, Johnson and crew got some much needed playoff experience.

Hawks v. Preds. I said Hawks in 5, but it actually took them 6. Lets be honest about this series, the Hawks played like poop and the Preds played like a team. The Preds did a good job of shutting down Marian Hossa, Toews and Sharp who didn't get a lot of production. Patrick Kane on the other hand, was making things happen a getting a little over a point per game on average, including a goal with 13 seconds left in Game 5 with the Hawks trailing by a goal. Pekka Rinne for the other side seemed unsolvable for most of the series, since the Hawks were only able to muster 3 goals in the first 2 games. Shea Weber and Ryan Suter did a good job shutting down the Hawks offensive players. Grebeshkov showed just how important he is on the Preds back end. Once he came back their power play had a little more power in it, but still not enough to figure out Antti Niemi.

NHL Role Players to Watch

Ok. So maybe it doesn't count since a couple of Western Conference games happened last night, but I didn't get a chance to watch them and only looked at the box scores on my crackberry this morning. In any event, here's a couple more players to watch.

Joe Pavelski, San Jose Sharks. Joe is one of those good all around players. He's responsible defensively and can also pot a couple goals for his club. Should the big Thornton, Marleau, Heatley line be broken up, he'll be one of the first players to get playing time with one of those big guns.

Darcy Tucker, Colorado Avalanche. A feisty guy with the ability to agitate, and playoff experience (even if that was pre-lockout with the Leafs). Watch him get under the opposing team's skin.

Shane Doan, Phoenix Coyotes. The single most important guy currently on the team that wasn't just called up from the minors. The team leader in points out of all the players that started the season in Phoenix. He's going to have to keep up that pace, as well as leading by example against the Wings. The addition of Wojtek Wolski should give him a little bit of breathing room on the ice.

Darren Helm, Detroit Red Wings. One of their grinders. He might not see a whole lot of playing time with Zetterberg or Datsyuk, but he is one of the guys that does the dirty work and bangs around the other team's d-men. Expect him to excel in the series against Phoenix.

Christian Ehrhoff, Vancouver Canucks. One of the top d-men for the Canucks now that Willie Mitchell is sidelined. Should get a little more playing time if the Canucks get a good lead on the Kings, so they can rest the banged up Sami Salo. He gets some PP time, and will have ample opportunity to pick up assists getting the puck to Burrows and the Sedin Twins.

Rob Scuderi, Los Angeles Kings. He was brought in for two reasons: playoff experience and shot blocking abilities. It's his turn to show the young guys, like Doughty and Simmonds, on the Kings what playoff hockey is all about. He'll be solid, despite playing against the other teams top players.

David Legwand, Nashville Predators. He has only have playoff experience with Nashville, which were all first round exits. Not that he ever plays down, but that should make him much more hungry to advance, much like Jason Arnott who is nearing the end of his career. He plays a hard nosed game and goes hard to the net. His physical play should work well against the Hawks.

Dave Bolland, Chicago Blackhawks. The second line center behind Toews and filling that role nicely. Has a good ability to dish the puck to line mates and pot a couple goals. Spent most of the season out with a back injury, but has been steadily improving his play since returning. He was also one of the more solid Hawks playing between Havlat and Sharp on their run to the Conference Finals last season.

NHL Role Players to Watch

Brooks Laich, Washington Capitals. Everyone knows about Ovechkin, Semin, Backstrom and Green. Those guys should and will excel against the Canadiens. But Brooks is going to play a very important role for the Caps holding down the fort while linemates Semin and Backstrom work their magic.

Benoit Pouliot, Montreal Canadiens. Benoit spent most of his time in Minnesota. He's a player that is responsible defensively with some offensive upside. He's a young guy, and this will be only his second game in the NHL playoffs. Should get ample opportunity against weaker defenders, since Cammalleri & Co. will draw the other team's top defensemen.

Jordan Staal, Pittsburgh Penguins. OK. So he might not be a role player, but he is a huge part of the Pens, and fills a role. (get that?) A penalty kill specialist is going to have plenty of opportunity to shut down other teams' top lines.

Chris Neil, Ottawa Senators. He's a tough customer. Watch his physical play and ability to get nasty in the corners pay off and piss off Brooks Orpik.

Drew Stafford, Buffalo Sabres. Didn't have the best regular season by any stretch of the imagination, but his offensive upside in the playoffs is going to be needed by the Sabres if they're going to get out of the first round. He finished the season hot with 4 points in 4 games.

Michael Ryder, Boston Bruins. He's one of those role players that comes alive in the playoffs. Never one to be counted out of a play, he can usually be found crashing the net.

Travis Zajac, New Jersey Devils. One of the Devils top five scorers. Mostly overlooked with bigger names on the team like Rolston, Kovalchuk, and Elias. Expect this guy to get a little extra space on the ice, even against the hard checking Flyers.

Matt Carle, Philadelphia Flyers. A solid d-man that will not have to worry about shutting down the other teams top lines, but could certainly be the shut down guy if they Flyers need him to be.

NHL Offseason Housekeeping

A little more housekeeping this morning.

The Atlanta Thrashers have promoted Don Waddel to President and Rick Dudley to GM. They have also fired the entire coaching staff, including former NHLer Randy Cunneyworth.

I don't have any opinions on the promotion of Don Waddel. I do think that Rick Dudley will be a good fit in helping the Thrashers rebuild. After all he was part of helping to bring the core of the Tampa Bay Lightning that won a cup. More recently, he helped build the core of the Chicago Blackhawks, as well as stints with other teams in the NHL and IHL (remember that league?).

Although I can't disagree with the letting go of the former GM and coaching staff, I can speculate that Atlanta had a lot going on to detract from the team troughout the season. We can't help but think that the whirlwinds that surrounded the attempted resigning of Ilya Kovalchuk, up until just before the trade deadline/olympic break, caused the team to lose some focus. In defense of the GM and coaching staff, the team played well down the stretch without Kovalchuk in the line up. Also, despite Ilya saying that he wanted to stay in Atlanta, it's pretty evident that he was going to walk once the season ended anyways. It's good that they were at least able to get a solid d-man in Johnny Oduya, Niclas Bergfors, Patrice Cormier, and a couple picks in the 2010 draft from New Jersey.

NHL Offseason Housekeeping

Regular season has been over for almost 48 hours now. Two firings and one player is already certainly going to be moving in the off season, and one retirement rumor.

As I'm sure you've already heard, Rick Tocchet and Brian Lawton were let go as head coach and GM, respectively, of the Tampa Bay Lightning. I can't say that I disagree with the decision, but it doesn't sit right with me as far as Tocchet goes. Was he really given a fair shake? That point is arguable. He was given two years to get the team going, and they never really played well for him. On the other hand, the ownership squables and subsequent sale of the team left a lot up in the air and probably tied their hands a little bit as to what could be done with the team. Lecavalier, St. Louis, Stamkos and the rest of the team should be in for a rude awakening, since any decent owner is going to hire someone much like their old coach, John Tortarella.

Just heard out of Dallas that Joe Nieuwendyk does not plan on resigning fan favorite goalie, Marty Turco, because it is time for Turco and team to move on. That leaves the door open for Kari Lehtonen to step up and be the Number 1 goalie for the Stars.

Also out of Dallas, Mike Modano had an emotional 3rd period against Anaheim. He basically thanked the fans of the Stars and Northstars for all of the love they gave him while playing for the organization. Video is below.

NHL Playoff Predictions

Got a little bit of extra time today, so here goes. Now on to the Western Conference. Clicking on the links will take you to random card for each player.

Sharks v. Avalanche. San Jose isn't deep. One great line of Thornton, Marleau, and Heatly. Decent supporting cast, but not anywhere near being Stanley Cup caliber talent. Colorado is young. Too young. But that could work for them. Duchense and Mueller might be out, but there will be plenty of other young players able to step up like Stastny, Stewart, and O'Reilly. Anderson had a great regular season and a good post season showing will raise his stock. Still, San Jose in 5.

Coyotes v. Red Wings. The Yotes are another young team, but with a good mix of veteran leadership and talent. Bryzgalov will have to stand on his head to keep the Yotes in a position to win each game. Doan and Wolski will have to pot more than a few against a hot Howard, and their defense will have to play pretty much perfect hockey. Zetterberg, Datsyuk, and Holmstrom will steam roll this team out of the playoffs in 5 games.

Canucks v. Kings. The Kings have a bit of a question in goal. Who is going to be the go-to guy: Ersberg, Quick, or Bernier? The front end of the Kings are coming along nicely. Kopitar and Simmonds are kicking arse and taking names. Doughty is keeping the back end tied down at a young age. On the other hand, Luongo is faltering of late. Daniel and Henrik Sedin are going to have to lead the charge against whichever Kings goalie is in net. The Canucks d-corps are depleted with Willie Mitchell out and Sami Salo and O'Brien a little banged up. This one could be a toss up, but for the sake of picking: Kings in 6

Hawks v. Predators. The Hawks are another team with some injuries on the back end. With Campbell out, Byfuglien has been filling in nicely in his absence. The line of Toews, Sharp, and Hossa is creating havoc in the other teams' end. Nashville should never be counted out though. Arnott and Erat are going to have to lead the charge on a young and untested Hawks goalie. Weber and Suter need to hold down the fort by not allowing the Hawks get too comfortable in the offensive zone. Pekka Rinne is another untested goalie, but the Preds at least have a capable goalie in Ellis waiting in the wings for another chance to take the No. 1 job. Hawks in 5.

NHL Playoff Predictions

The chase for the Stanley Cup starts on Wednesday. The most anticipated time of the season for hockey fans. It's going to be a good first round since there are some pretty good match ups. So, here are a couple of quick reviews since I have a few spare minutes at work.

Washington v. Montreal. Sweep here Ovechkin, Semin, and Backstrom are going to be too much for Gionta, Cammalleri and Halak to handle. Washington in 4.

New Jersey v. Philadelphia. Going the distance. Pronger, Richards, and Carter are going to physically dominate Parise, Kovalchuk, and Rolston. Brodeur is going to stand on his head, like he always does in the playoffs, but that's not going to be enough this year. Philly in 7.

Buffalo v. Boston. All it takes is a hot goaltender, and there is no doubt that Miller has been hot since November 2009. Tyler Myers is going to get some great experience, something every prospect needs to further develop. Roy and Vanek will lead the charge against Boston's Thomas. Chara will keep it together on the back end. Lucic will be in his element, playing physical and scoring goals. Buffalo in 5.

Pittsburgh v. Ottawa. What is there to say about the reigning champs? Malkin, Crosby and Fleury are...well champs. They know how to win. Ottawa on the other hand has been on a slide ever since they made it to the finals a few years ago. If Alfredsson and Spezza show up, they have a chance...but with all of the turmoil the team has been through (Heatly and Emery sagas) it's hard to imagine them coming together to beat the defenders of The Stanley Cup. Pens in 5.

2010 Trade Deadline Recap

I know it's a little late. Work has been getting the best of me lately. So, now that it is the weekend and the dust has settled on the trades that went down, I'll recap the big ones, in case you missed them...like I did because of work. I'll also provide links to cards that are for sale through sportsbuy.com.

Colorado got Stephan Yelle and Harrison Reed from Carolina for Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll and a 6th round pick in 2010. I don't know much about Reed or McNicoll. But Stephan Yelle will be a good guy to have around all of those kids the Avs are stockpiling.

Calgary picked up Steve Staois from Edmonton for Aaron Johnson and a conditional 3rd round pick in 2010 or 2011. Edmonton continues to unload and restart the rebuild that failed miserably the first time around. Aaron Johnson is a stable young d-man that will be steady for them.

Edmonton picks up Ryan Whitney from Anaheim for Lubomir Visnovsky. Again, Edmonton is going young, as they should. After the next draft their core is going to be Sam Gagner and whoever they pick. Whitney will fit in well on their blue line and will help ease the growing pains.

Washington picks up Joe Corvo from Carolina for Brian Potheir and Oskar Osala and a pick. I like what Washington did all day. Their defensive corps got a lot tougher and more solid, as did their fourth line.

Buffalo picked up Raffi Torres and a 2nd round pick in 2010 from Buffalo for Nathan Paetsch. Torres can pot a couple goals, something the Sabres need, and can be a pain in the butt to play against. Columbus needs solid d-men, which they picked up in this trade. A win for both teams.

Calgary picked Vesa Toskala from Anaheim for Curtis McElhinney. Now, I know Toskala had his problems in Toronto, but was he really that bad that he is only as capable as McElhinney? Is Calgary going to be that much of a less stressful place for him to play? I have to say that I like this trade for Calgary. If Kiprusoff falters, they'll have, what I believe to be, a capable back up sitting on the bench.

Phoenix gets Wojtek Wolski from Colorado for Peter Mueller and Kevin Porter. Wolski needed a change in scenery. His production was way off, and he never quite lived up to expectations in Colorado. The same can be said for Peter Mueller and Kevin Porter in Phoenix. I can't imagine that the extra-curricular activities surrounding the Yotes made it much easier for them. I expect Mueller and Porter to improve while on the Avs. Especially since they're going to make up a good portion of what is going to be a really really good team in a year or two.

Player of the Day: Ryan Callahan

For the past few weeks I've been doing a player of the day feature. Today is no different. From the New York Rangers and part of Team USA, comes a player that can become the spark plug for Team USA at the Olympics: Ryan Callahan.

Ryan's junior career started while playing for the Rochester Americans of the Empire Junior B Hockey League (Empire League) for two years between 1999-01. He then moved on to the Syracuse Junior Crunch and Buffalo Lightning of the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League (OPJHL). After his stop in the OPJHL he played 4 years of major junior hockey with the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). During his stint with Guelph, he was named to the Third All-Star Team in 2004-05, the Second All-Star Team in 2005-06. During the 2005-06 season he was awarded the Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the best overage player in the OHL.

After juniors he turned pro with the Hartford Wolfpack of the AHL in 2006-07. There he was named to the AHL's All-Rookie Team by scoring 55 points in 60 games. He also was called up throughout that season to play 14 games, and 10 playoff games, for the New York Rangers. The following year, he started the season with the Rangers and played in the first 8 games until he injured his knee and was out for a month. After returning he was unable to score a goal in 16 games. The Rangers then sent him back to Hartford to work on his game. Fortunately for Ryan he was called back up after Brendan Shannahan (COMC) was injured. 2008-09 was Ryan's best season to date. For the Rangers, he played in 81 games scoring 22 goals and notching 40 points. He scored the game winning goal that clinched a playoff spot for the Rangers in the last game of the regular season.

Sunday Shake Up

In case you haven't heard yet. The Leafs, Flames, and Ducks all pulled the trigger on some big trades today. Read the story on TSN.ca here.

The Leafs traded Jamal Mayers, Ian White, Niklas Hagman, and Matt Stajan to the Flames for Phaneuf, Sjostrom, and Brandon Wheat King Defenseman, Keith Auile.

In a completely separate trade, the Leafs sent Toskala and Blake packing while opening the door to J.S. Giguere. Since Anaheim recently signed Jonas Hiller to a 4 year contract extension on Saturday, Giggy became expendable.

Despite two big trades, Brian Burke the GM of the Leafs said he's not done yet, so expect another move or two from the Leafs before the trade deadline.

Calgary got a couple forwards that are going to add a little bit of scoring punch in Stajan and Hagman. Something they've been lacking all season. While the Flames also picked up a capable 5th or 6th defenseman in Ian White. Jamal Mayers is the prototypical Sutter player with his physical play.

Anaheim benefits by getting a goalie that can play #1 minutes, and mentor the young Hiller, while staying out of the hockey centered media spotlight that most likely caused him to falter in Toronto. Blake will be a good fit with the younger, and older players like Selanne, that have something left to give in terms of offensive output.

Toronto gets a couple players that can help teach the young Jonas Gustavson and Luke Schenn the ropes of the NHL, as well as stick around for a while to give the Leaf fans some hope while the team begins a long rebuild.

Player of the Day: Rick Nash

As I have been doing the for the past weeks, I'm showcasing a player from Team USA or Team Canada as a player of the day. Today's player is the heart and soul of the Columbus Blue Jackets, their franchise player, the prototypical NHL power forward and a sniper to boot: Rick Nash.

Rick played for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) where he got 66 points as a rookie. His rookie point total won him the Emms Family Award as the OHL's top rookie. The following year he amassed 72 points in 54 games. Following his sophomore season with the Knights he was drafted 1st overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

He joined the Blue Jackets the same year as his draft and scored a goal in his first game. He was the eighth player taken 1st overall to score a goal in his first game, and the first to do so since Mario Lemieux. After his rookie season, he was nominated for the Calder Trophy, but eventually lost out to Barrett Jackman of the St. Louis Blues. The following year he was tied with Jarome Iginla and Ilya Kovalchuck for the league lead in goals with 41. He was also the youngest player in history to lead the NHL in goals.

During the NHL lockout he joined Joe Thornton playing for HC Davos. While playing for Davos, he recorded 46 points in 44 games. He also recorded 11 points in 15 playoff games and helping to lead Davos to the Swiss League Championship and the Spengler Cup.

The year following the lockout Nash was sidelined with knee and ankle injuries. Despite being out for most of the beginning of the season, he was still named to Team Canada for the 2006 Olympics in Turin. After returning to the Blue Jackets for the remainder of the 2005-06 season, he recorded points at a point per game pace and totaling 54 points and games played.

Player of the Day: Ryan Suter

As I have been doing every day, I will be highlighting a player from Team USA or Team Canada as a player of the day. Today's player from the Nashville Predators and Team USA is one of the best young defensemen in the NHL: Ryan Suter.

Ryan is a consistent, hard checking defensemen for the Nashville Predators. He was taken in the 1st round, 7th overall in the 2003 NHL entry draft. He honed his skills playing for the Wisconsin Badgers of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association(WCHA) during the 2003-04 season, his hometown college team. During the lockout season he played for the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL. He played his first NHL season in 2005-06 and was able to pot 16 points in 71 games. Each season his point total increased due to more power play time as he established himself as one of the teams top four defensemen.

Ryan has played for Team USA seven times total. Three times he donned the Red, White and Blue jersey he helped win a gold medal. His first gold came in 2002 at the World Junior Under-17 Hockey Championships. That same year he got another gold at the World Junior Under-18 Hockey Championships. His last gold medal came in 2004 at the World Junior Hockey Championships. Overall he has played in 41 international games and contributed 26 points.

Player of the Day: Brent Seabrook

Each day, I have been highlighting a player from Team USA and Team Canada leading up to the Vancouver Olympics that has a chance to stand out during the games. Today's player from Team Canada is a standout shutdown defensemen for the Chicago Blackhawks, who usually is second in ice time per game on the team, and plays a very effective shutdown role against other teams top lines: Brent Seabrook.

Brent's junior career started and ended with the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He was drafted by the Hurricanes in the first round of the 2000 bantam draft. He played 4 years with Lethbridge and had his best year in 2004-05 when he had 54 points, was a +25, and accumulated 107 penalty minutes. After his final season of junior hockey, he played 9 games for the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL.

His first season out of juniors (2005-06) he made the Blackhawks roster out of training camp and played in 69 of the Hawks games. Each season in the NHL his plus/minus has improved steadily, while logging top minutes against other teams best lines. Always one to stand up for his teammates, he is willing to drop the gloves with just about anybody, despite his important role with the Hawks. During the 2008-09 playoffs, he was able to put up 12 points in 17 games. Over the course of those playoffs, he effectively shut down the Iginla (Calgary) and Sedin (Vancouver) lines, while also doing a good job shutting down the Zetterberg (Detroit) line in the Western Conference Finals.

Player of the Day: Ryan Kesler

Each day, I have been highlighting a player from Team USA and Team Canada leading up to the Vancouver Olympics that has a chance to stand out during the games. Today's player from Team USA is a role player, pain in the butt to play against, and has had much success on the international level: Ryan Kesler.

Ryan was drafted by the Brampton Battalion of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in June 2000. Despite being drafted by Brampton, he chose to play for the U.S. National Team Development Program (USNTDP) so that he could later play NCAA college hockey. He played for the USNTDP for 2 years putting up 99 points in 131 games while attending high school and playing against kids that were mostly 2-3 years older than him.

After high school and the USNTDP, he accepted a scholarship to play for the Ohio State Buckeyes of the Central Collegiate Hockey League (CCHL). While with the Buckeyes, he was named the George Burke Most Valuable Freshman by scoring 11 goals and 20 assists to finish fourth on his team in scoring. The following summer he was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks. The following season, 2003-04, he got played in 5 preseason games for the Canucks, but was sent down to the Manitoba Moose of the AHL. For most of that season, he split time between the Moose and Canucks, ultimately playing in 28 NHL games his first year. During the lockout he spent the entire season with the Moose, in which he stood out as one of the Canucks best prospects. That season he was named to the AHL's all-star team and finish 3rd in scoring for the Moose.

Kesler joined the Canucks for all 82 games of the 2005-06 season, thus starting his rookie season. In 2006-07 he suffered a torn acetabular labrum and only played in 48 games. Over the course of the 2007-08 season he was able to establish himself as one of the best two-way forwards in the NHL. That season he set career highs in goals scored (21) and points (37). During the 2008-09 season he was placed on a line with free agent pick ups' Pavol Demitra and Mats Sundin. While playing with them he was able to better his career bests in goals (26), assists (33), and points (59). Those numbers earned Ryan league wide recognition as a Selke Trophy Finalist.

During his career he has also earned two gold medals. The first was at the 2002 World Under 18 Championships held in Piestany. After the Under 18 Championships, he was awarded the Best Player Award, since he was the best player in the tournament. The other being the 2004 World Junior Championships held in Helsinki.

Player of the Day: Patrick Marleau

In case you missed it, I will be highlighting a player from Team USA and Team Canada leading up to the Vancouver Olympics. Today's player of the day, is the San Jose Sharks' franchise leader in scoring and games played: Patrick Marleau.

He began his junior career in 1995-96 playing for the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League (WHL). While playing for the Thunderbirds in 1996-97, he finished in the top three in the league in goals scored and totals points (51g, 125pts). Following his time with the Thunderbirds, he was draft second overall in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, right behind current teammate Joe Thornton (1st overall).

During his first few years in the league, he put up respectable numbers for a skilled forward playing in the "Dead Puck Era." Following the lockout, he became a point per game player, with the exception of the 2007-08 season, which was a down year for him.

While playing for Team Canada he was able to win a gold medal at the 2003 World Championships. During the lockout, he was part of Team Canada at the 2004 World Cup and 2005 World Championships.

Player of the Day: Ryan Malone

In case you missed it , I will be highlighting a player from Team USA and Team Canada leading up to the Vancouver Olympics. Today's player, from Team USA and one of the top power forwards in the NHL, Ryan Malone.

With his strength, size, and willingness, Ryan takes the puck hard to the net and is willing to take a beating to screen goalies. He developed these skills by playing against top tier players and by adopting the hard working attitude of his hometown of Pittsburgh. For his junior year of high school he attended and played for Shattuck-St. Mary's. During his senior year of high school he played for the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL). After high school he played 4 years at St. Cloud State of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association(WCHA), where he was on over a point a game pace during his junior and senior years.

Ryan was drafted in the 4th round of the NHL entry draft before going to play for St. Cloud State. He made his professional debut for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 2002-03. The following year, he made the Pittsburgh Penguins out of training camp and played in all 81 games while putting up respectable numbers totaling 43 points. During the lockout season he spent time playing in Finland, Italy and Switzerland. After the lockout he came back to beat his NHL rookie point total by 1 point. He has had his career season in 2007-08 when he got 51 points and 103 penalty minutes. That same year he helped the Penguins reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs by potting 16 points in 20 games. Over the summer of 2008 him and Gary Roberts' rights were traded to Tampa Bay. Ryan signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning on June 28, 2008. He is currently playing for Tampa Bay. At times he placed on a line with Stamkos and St. Louis, which will only help him eclipse his previous career point totals. Playing in the Vancouver Olympics will be Ryan's first taste of international hockey.

Player of the Day: Eric Staal

In case you missed it , I will be highlighting a player from Team USA and Team Canada leading up to the Vancouver Olympics. Today's player, from Team Canada and the newest captain of the Carolina Hurricanes, is Eric Staal.

Beginning in 2000-01, through the 2002-03 season, Eric played for the Peterborough Petes on the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Each year he was able to increase his point totals to 49, 62, 98 respectively. Coming off of his 98 point season he was awarded the Top Draft Prospect Award. He was also named to the OHL's second all star team and the Canadian Hockey League's (CHL) first all star team.

He was selected second overall in the NHL's entry draft in 2003, and began his NHL career during the 2003-04 season. He played in 81 games that season and put up respectable numbers with 11G-20A-31PTS. During the lock out year he spent a season with the Lowell Lock Monsters of the AHL. He played 77 games with Lowell and put up 77 points. The next season, 2005-06, Eric was instrumental in the Hurricanes' playoff run, ultimately leading to them winning the Stanley Cup. Since the lockout he has played in all 82 of the Hurricanes' regular season games.

Over the summer of 2007 he helped Team Canada win a gold medal in the World Hockey Championships. While on the verge of getting married over the summer of 2007, Eric and his brother Jordan were arrested after partying a little too hard at Eric's bachelor party. The following summer, 2008, he helped Team Canada win a gold medal at the same tournament.

Player of the Day: Phil Kessel

In case you missed it , I will be highlighting a player from Team USA and Team Canada leading up to the Vancouver Olympics. Today's player, from Team USA, is Phil Kessel.

As product of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program (NTDP), Phil has been able to compete against players that were stronger, faster, older, and had more experience. He played for both the Under-17 and Under-18 teams between 2003 and 2005, while amassing franchise records for goals (104), most points (180), and the most goals in a season (52) whom he shares with Team USA teammate Patrick Kane. It should also be noted that he recorded 62 points in 47 games while playing for Team USA in the World Junior Championships and the Under 18 World Junior Championships.

From there he went on to play with the Minnesota Golden Gophers of the Western Collegiate Hockey League (WCHA). While with the Gophers, he was awarded the WCHA rookie of the year, made the WCHA's all rookie team, and helped his stacked Gopher's team win the MacNaughton Cup during the 2005-06 season.

From there he went on to play for the Boston Bruins during the 2006-07 season. He started the season off with the Bruins, but needed a stop in Providence for a rehab stint after undergoing surgery to remove testicular cancer. That same season, he was named to the NHL's all rookie team and won the Masterson Trophy for his dedication to the game of hockey.

At the end of the 2008-09 season it was determined that Phil needed shoulder surgery. But before he could play another game for the Bruins, and over a contract dispute, he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for 2 first and 1 second round picks. He returned to a Leafs team that was unable to put the wins on the board, and instantly added a more offensive punch to their lineup.

Player of the Day: Duncan Keith

In case you missed it , I will be highlighting a player from Team USA and Team Canada leading up to the Vancouver Olympics. With no further adeiu, I give you today's player: Duncan Keith.

The fleet footed Keith is currently the Number 1 defensemen, and ice time leader game in and game out, for the Chicago Blackhawks. Originally drafted by Chicago in the second round, 54th overall, in 2002. Duncan took a different route than most players to the NHL. He started off playing in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), then moved on to playing NCAA hockey for Michigan State scored his first collegiate goal in the Cold War game, where he spent two years, before moving on to the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League (WHL). After his last year of junior eligability he spent two years honeing his craft in the American Hockey League with the Norfolk Admirals. He played in 81 games with the Blackhawks as a rookie in 2005-06 and got on the score sheet for 21 points (9G 12A) and 79 penalty minutes.

His only international experience came in 2008 when he played for Team Canada in the World Championships and helped Canada win the silver medal. During his 9 game run with Team Canada in the World Championships, he only contributed 2 assists, but was a +9 while shutting down some of the best hockey players that were out of their leagues' playoffs.

2009-10 Artifacts Blaster Break

This one's a little late since I busted it in mid-December. But with the holiday's and all that other stuff out of the way, I figured now is as good of a time as any to show off what I got. This one was busted by just me, which might explain it's lack of star power.

Niklas Backstrom-Again, I can't help but feel good whenever I pull a card from my "other" team. He would be the center piece of an organization if he wasn't overshadowed by Ovechkin. He's going to benefit from playing on Washington for a long time, since other teams top defensemen won't be able to focus on him as often as they should.

Eric Staal-Unfortunate that he had to leave to the team recently due to family issues. Can't blame him for that. He has been and will be for years to come the top guy on the Canes. Recently named to Team Canada in the upcoming Vancouver Olympics too.

Marc-Andre Fleury-Marc will most likely be playing third fiddle behind Brodeur and Luongo during the Olympics. But the experience of being around winners like them, and the other guys in the locker room for Team Canada, will pay dividends down the road for himself and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Ryan Miller-The go to guy for the Sabres and Team USA. He's my favorite to win Vezina (top goalie) and Pearson (league MVP). Expect him to keep up his great performance after the Olympics. Especially if Buffalo expects to make the playoffs.

Devin Setoguchi-I will admit to not knowing a whole lot about Devin. Since he plays on the west coast, I don't get to see him play much, other than the times my Hawks are out that way. From what I've seen though, he looks like he could be another great player and learn much from Jumbo Joe.

Steven Stamkos-Last years most prized pick up for any collector. He started off slowly in 2008-09 and picked it up in the later half of the season to finish with respectable numbers. He started this season right where he left off and will put up numbers that are closer to what we all thought he would be putting up.

Jay Beagle-Still hasn't proven himself at the NHL level, but that's OK. It usually takes defensmen a little bit longer than forwards to get accustomed to the size and speed of the NHL. Another year or two down in Hersey won't hurt him.

Matt Carle-He's been in the league since 2006-07 when he broke in full time with the Sharks and was named to the NHL's All Rookie Team. Since then he has moved teams twice. He was once traded to Tampa Bay for Dan Boyle and again traded to Philadelphia for Steve Eminger and Steve Downie, where I think he fits in nicely playing along side Chris Pronger. He is starting to be recognized for his abilities in the NHL.

Player of the Day: Joe Pavelski

Why Joe will succeed at the Olympics: Won a Wisconsin State Hockey Championship while attending Stevens Point Area Senior High. Won the USHL's Clark Cup in 2004 as part of the Waterloo Blackhawks. Lead the Wisconsin Badgers in points in 2005-06 season, and helped those same Badgers win the NCAA Division 1 National Championship. Joe lead the San Jose Sharks in game winning goals (3) throughout the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Being a smooth skating, shot blocking, and competent player on both sides of the puck has enabled Joe to play and succeed in all situations, evidenced by his ability to put up more than a point per game until reaching the NHL. During the Vancouver Olympics, expect Joe to fill more of a grinder/defensive forward role, while still being able to fill a spot on the power play if needed.

Player of the Day: Mike Richards-Captain of the Flyers

Why he will succeed: In 2002-03 he was the leading scorer for the Kitchener Rangers, of the Ontario Hockey League, with 87 points. That same year, he was one of the teams leading scorers and helped the team capture the Memorial Cup by racking up 27 points in 21 games. In 2005 he was the captain of Team Canada during the World Junior Championships. Mike led that team to its first gold medal since 1997 while getting 5 points in 6 games. In 2004-05 he joined the Philadelphia Phantoms and helped them win the Calder Cup. Throughout the AHL playoffs, he became a key player for the Phantoms and recorded 15 points in 14 playoff games. He was announced as a finalist for the Selke Trophy after the 2009 season, but narrowly lost to Pavel Datsyuk by 3 votes. Because of his defensive abilities he is a premier penalty killer, and because of his offensive abilities he was able to score a league leading 7 short handed goals in the 2008-09 season. After the 2008-09 season it was revealed that Mike had needed surgeries on both shoulders since training camp, but was able to play the entire season by taking anti-inflammatory medication.

Player of the Day: Jack Johnson

Today's player of the day is Jack Johnson.

Why he will succeed: Currently one of the top, hard hitting, goal scoring defenseman for the Los Angeles Kings. He attended Shattuck-St. Mary's in Minnesota, and won the U.S. National Championships in 2002-03 as a sophomore. He played 2 years at the University of Michigan in the CCHA. After his sophomore year at U of M he was named the CCHA Offensive Defenseman of the year.

Drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 1st Round, third overall, in 2005. But being unable to sign Johnson, due to his commitment to attend school and play at U of M, the Carolina Hurricanes traded Jack to LA for Tim Gleason and Eric Belanger. In 2006 he was named to the World Junior Championship All Star Team. He played his first NHL game on March 29, 2007, and scored his first NHL goal against Roberto Luongo on October 10, 2007.

Player of the Day: Ryan Getzlaf

Ryan is the power behind Anaheim's offense and one of the players representing Canada in the Vancouver Olympics. A power forward with grit and a quick shot, he has no problem taking the puck to the net or putting opposing defensemen through the end boards.

Why he will succeed: He's always been able to put up points, and no one should think that the olympic stage will be any different. 18 points as a rookie with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League. He then followed his WHL rookie season with a 68 point sophomore season. During the Ducks Stanley Cup run in 2007 he lead the team in playoff scoring with 17 points in 21 games. After the Ducks were eliminated from the playoffs in 2008 he joined Team Canada in the World Championships in which he recorded 14 points in 9 games. The following season he was named a starter for the Western Conference in the 2009 All-Star Game. During that same season he put up career highs in goals (25) and points (91).

Player of the Day: Ryan Miller

So I've decided that I'm going to highlight players that have the possibility of putting on a great performance for Team USA and Team Canada in the upcoming Olympics. I'm also going to highlight some of their cards that could gain in value depending on their performance.

Today's player of the day is Ryan Miller, the Buffalo Sabres goalie and future Olympic goalie for Team USA. Lately, he's been one of the best players on the Sabres. Ryan was born in East Lansing, Michigan and attended college at Michigan State University, where he won the Hobby Baker Award and was named the CCHA's (Central Collegiate Hockey Association) goalie of the year for the 3 years that he attended MSU.

On another note, Ryan and his father, Dean, started the Steadfast Foundation. The foundation supports cancer patients and their families.

09-10 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Box Break

I picked up a box of 09-10 Upper Deck Series 1 on eBay, since I really wanted to bust some of these packs. Again, me and the fiance opened it, and as usual she got the majority of the hits-including all 6 young guns that come in each box. Here is a little bit of the inserts and subsets we pulled, as well as a link to the card on Sportsbuy.com.

Face of the Franchise-Alexander Ovechkin (pictured) and Carey Price. The cards themselves are kind of plain, but it gives you a chance to see the players faces and a pretty good shot of some of the goalie helmets.

Hockey Heros-Martin Brodeur #HH18 (pictured) and #HH14. Again I like the litograph-esq cards. It is a pretty good homage to Brodeur's career, but the smile on his face makes me think he's enamouored with a pair of tits and can't stop stareing. The other cards in the set are kind of plain, just like the Crosby Hockey Heros Upper Deck did last year.

Young Gun-Peter Regin.

We also pulled Dmitry Kulikov, Ivan Vishnevskiy, Riku Helenius, and Jason Demers. Overall, I like the design of the cards. Still some pretty decent pictures of the players featured on the cards despite the limited amount of time that they've played in the NHL.

Game Jersey-Marian Hossa and a 2 color swatch from Oilers center, Marc-Antoine Pouliot (pictured). Fairly simple design. Picture of the player, a pieces of jersey that may or may not be game worn, and a color scheme that dosen't match the team's colors.

All World Team-Ilya Kovalchuk (pictured) and Martin Brodeur. Decent looking cards, but I would've expected a design like this in the late 90s.

Top Gun-Zach Parise (pictured) and Thomas Vanek. I really, really, really like the look of these cards. There is a lot going on with the design, but it all funnels your attention back to the center of the card to focus on the player.

Draft Day Gem-Henrik Zetterberg. Decent design, but what I really like about this set is that it gives a little bit of insight on the player and how the drafting team found him.

Season Highlight-Evgeni Malkin. Any time that a player is featured in a locker-room celebration with a trophy, it turns out to be a cool card. This one goes beyond that and tells why "Geno" was the recipient of that trophy.

Dan started his career with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the IHL in 97-98. He broke into the NHL in 98-99 with the Florida Panthers. On January 7, 2002 the Panthers traded him to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a 5th round pick. Dan was instrumental in 2004-05 when the Lightning won the Stanley Cup. Spent the locked out season with Djurgardens IF Stockholm. On July 4, 2008 he was traded to the San Jose Sharks for Matt Carle, Ty Wishart and 2 draft picks. He is currently with the Sharks, and was one of TSN's picks to possibly win the Norris Trophy for the 09-10 season.

I picked up and relisted a few cards on Checkoutmycards.com. I got a few Jordans and hockey cards from the 71-72 Topps hockey set.

I always like the look of the litograph-esq cards. Not a bad deal that this guy is currently one of the NHL's leading goal scorers. Too bad he was trapped in a defense first system when he played in Minnesota and often injured.

That's right. MJ just dunked on you. Feel shame.

Looks like MJ is pooping out some Magic.

A young Bobby Clarke. Besides the graying hair and a few pounds, it doesn't look like he's changed much. It was nice to see him at the Winter Classic. Orr kinda looked scared to shake his hand, like Clarke was gonna jab him as soon as he stuck his hand out.

If I were Bobby Hull's brother, I'd be smiling like that too. I guess he didn't get the memo about looking mean when they took his picture.

Not a bad looking card. His hair kinda looks like it is painted on a la from a 50's movie.

2007-08 OPC Box Break

Another one of my Christmas presents came in. A hobby box of 2007-08 O-Pee-Chee. Thankfully, there were a lot of packs to be opened, since I was sick and sitting on the couch watching movies and basically just getting board out of my mind. Anyways, as usual, my fiance helped me open all of the packs. Here is what we pulled that isn't the basic base stuff.

Ryan Getzlaf-In Action. Not a bad looking card to say the least.

1981-82 Marcel Dionne-Super Action. I was excited when I pulled it, since I thought it was some sort of buy back or something. But I will have no such luck. Just a regular base card that they've probably had laying around, or lost behind someones desk, since 1981.

Nicklas Backstrom-Marquee Rookies. One of the better rookies that I pulled out of this box. Not a bad pull considering I am a closet Caps fan.

Jonathan Toews-Marquee Rookies. This one's going straight to my PC...for now.

Chris Higgins-Micromotion Black. What can I say. It's just a cool looking card. Doesn't hurt that he plays for one of the Original Six teams.

Joe Sakic-Micromotion Black. I always like pulling Super Joe. He had a great wrister before he got his hand stuck in a snow blower.

All in all, not a bad box. I enjoyed opening the packs. The card stock seems a little flimsy, but for a box that yielded close to 150 cards, I'm not complaining.

I'm thinking of opening a sportsbuy store. Anyone out there have any experience with one?

2007 SP Rookie Edition Baseball

For Christmas I got myself a box of the 2007 Upper Deck Rookie Edition Baseball, and a couple other boxes to be named later.

Again the fiance opened them with me, and as usual, she got the really good pulls. But, in no particular order, here is what we got.

Chris Stewart-Not a fan of the sticker autos.

Brandon Wood-Still not a fan of the sticker autos. Looks like his woman won't get off the phone with him before he goes to bat.

All in all, I'm happy with the pulls. There were a couple other Lincecum, Hamilton, and also a couple Dice K's that I didn't picture.

2008-09 UD Series 1

Yesterday, after making delicious Christmas cookies, me and the woman busted a blaster box of 08-09 Series 1. Again, she got all the hits (lucky lady). Her first hit was The Kids Hockey Heros card. I don't really like the throwback design of the card, but I didn't really like it back in the 90's when it was first relesed. Still, a Sid is a Sid. I'll take it.

Her second was the Captain's Calling Sid. Two in one blaster...super. It's a nice looking card. Not much more to say about it.

The third hit was a Peter Mueller Sophomore Sensations insert. I know a lot of people out there don't care for this kid, but I like him. He'll be a good player someday (once the rest of the Coyotes get more experience too. That's another good young team).

The fourth hit of the box was a Darren Helm Young Gun. A current and future pain in the butt for my Blackhawks. Also, one of the first two Young Guns in my possession. The other being Robbie Earl, but Earl dosen't show the promise that Helm does.

Overall, the blaster contained 3 Sids, 2 Peter Muellers, 2 Young Guns, and a whole lotta base cards. It was a fun box to open. Again, all of these cards will be available on my Facebook Fan Page before I send them elsewhere.

2009 Goodwin Champions Pack Break

For a $3.00 pack that I picked up at Wal-mart while waiting in line, it sure delivered. I don't expect much from the retail stuff, except hot the cards feel in my hand. These feel pretty good, and I was able to get some value out of the pack too. Here's what I got.

Daisuke Matsuzaka-A fantasy favorite of mine, although I dropped him at the beginning of last season because he pretty much sucked.

Chien-Ming Wang-I like the Yankee Stadium Inaugural Season badge. Really helps you notice that instead of Wang's butt sticking in your face.

Gary Sheffield-It's always nice to have a Sheffield in your back pocket.

Gordie Howe-Mini. Obviously, my favorite card of the pack. Nice lithographed image of Howe. I almost dropped this card on the floor when I opened the pack. I wasn't expecting to get anything good, but here it was/is. And what do you know, it's the first hockey card in the blog.

Overall I liked the way the cards feel in my hand. They came out of the pack flat. No warping at all unlike cards with a gloss a la Bowman Chrome, which I also picked up, but didn't get anything worth mentioning out of. Only the Howe is available through my fan page, but the others can be had by making me an offer.

2008 Topps Series 1 Box Break

Much like the Timeline break I did last week, the Series 1 cards that I broke this week came to me on the cheap. Let me just say, that I am glad I didn't pay too much for this box. Because I basically broke even on it.

So, like I just told you in my previouis blogum, I busted a box of the 2008 Upper Deck Timeline. I didn't catch it at first, but after going through the cards a second time, I noticed that Ichiro's last name is missing from the card. I know he is so good that he only needs to go by one name, but I figured Upper Deck would've at least put his full name onthere for goodness sake. You know, like they do for Babe, Mantle, Dimaggio, Howe, Orr, Gretzky, and the myriad of scrubs, benchwarmers, cheer leaders and semi-stars that play(ed) too. Tonight, I'll have a beer for all of the other one-name players, because like them, beer has only one name...Good.

2008 Upper Deck Timeline Box Break

Here's my first foray into the baseball card world since 1987.

So me and the woman just busted open a box of the Upper Deck Timeline. She got most of the good pulls. But here are three of the highlights.

Evan Longoria rookie card, #65

Now my personal favorite, and not just because it's the one that I pulled. Jermaine Dye memorabilia card, #TM-JD.

Being a Chicago fan (yeah the Cubs too), I always like pulling someone with a Chi-town jersey on. So for my first box of baseball cards in over 20 years, I'm pretty happy, but nothing for me to really keep for my PC.

Intro

After a long layoff from collecting, I'm back in the game. I want to collect, and flip, some hockey cards. Eventually I'll get into sports cards from the other three major sports. But hockey first and foremost. Why hockey? Well, because if it doesn't work, I won't mind holding onto my "inventory," because I like hockey cards, and hockey in general.

So enough of that stuff. I'm sure you're wondering how I'm going to do it. It's kind of a fly by the seat of your pants deal. A not-so-well-thought-out business plan consisting of buying single cards with a Beckett value of $15, or more, and boxes on eBay and "flipping" them for a few more bucks on COMC, a Facebook Fan Page, or one of the many message boards I frequent for not too much more than what I paid. I'm only looking to make $2.50 on each card, give or take a buck or two. That makes this more of a long-term grind to make money. But sometimes that's what it takes.

I won't lie. It's not going well after the first month. Still waiting for that first sale. But, I'm sure it'll pick up, and if not, I don't mind hanging on to the cards that I've put up.
